A version of the popular TED Talks video conferencing phenomenon is coming to Kamloops via Thompson Rivers University and the Kamloops-Thompson School District.

Dubbed TEDx, the free daylong event is geared for students in Grade 8 and first and second year university up to 20 years old, said co-organizer Tracy Poelzer.

Poelzer, the district’s technology co-ordinator, has worked since last year to bring the event to Kamloops.

It takes place Friday, Feb. 14, at TRU’s Black Box Theatre in the Old Main Building.

TED Talks typically features an 18-minute presentation of thoughts and ideas from presenters like Bill Clinton, Jane Goodall, Al Gore, Bill Gates and many Nobel Prize winners.

The TEDx events are independently organized. Poelzer said the Kamloops conference will focus on youth and include about 10 to 12 five-minute speeches by students in the school district and at TRU.

Youth have until Jan. 17 to audition, and can do so using via the event’s website at tedxyouthatkamloops.com.

TED, which stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design, requires 25 per cent of the content at TEDx conferences come from the TED library. Poelzer said the audience, which will be mostly youth, will hear past lectures by prominent people.

The Black Box Theatre holds 100 guests, so space is limited, said Sukh Heer-Matonovich, TRU’s manager of student engagement and retention, said the event will be an exciting one for students.

School district and TRU students are doing much of the organization. Heer-Matonovich said it’s great watching the older and younger students work together.

“There’s no better student engagement than that,” she said.
