life

LIFE is great in Australia.

I mean, when we're all off living it up on gap years and rocketing down the swimming pool like we're the next Thorpedo, what's there to complain about?

Certainly not our pink lake, great coffee or the swimming pools which are built in the ocean.

These are among the 23 reasons why Australia is awesome, according to a list by US website The Huffington Post.

Here's why we "have it better".

1. It's "incredibly normal to take a gap year" in Australia.

2 We have swimming pools in our oceans.

3. We have better coffee. The proof? When Starbucks came to Australia in 2000 its offerings were the same as those in the US but were considered "watered down". In 2008 it closed 61 of its 87 stores.

4. We have the Gold Coast. Yes, it's pretty fab, apart from when it's invaded by schoolies.

5. We have "turtle guides" for the period from January until March when newborn turtles crawl into our sea. Something many locals have probably never seen.

6. We can all swim fast, like Thorpe-style fast. Hmm ...

7. We get paid more. Our minimum wage is $16.37 an hour. In the US it ranges by state but can be as low as $5.15 (Georgia).

8. Canberra Day. In March our capital threw a party to celebrate its birthday. Among the celebrations was the world's longest champagne bar, which included hundreds of bottles. The HuffPost asks: "Who are these people?!"

Well, only Canberrans get to enjoy this holiday. And they pretty much deserve it, for enduring life there.

9. We have pink lakes.

10. Two words. Meat pies.

11. You can apply for a holiday visa to Australia online, meaning a lot less hassle

12. We don't sacrifice sustainability for tourism. That's according to theHuffPost. The proof? Lord Howe Island is only allowed to host 400 tourists at any time. Shame there are many other spectacular places around the nation that don't have this kind of restriction.

13. We have good desserts. Forget lamingtons, pavlovas and Anzac biscuits. It's our caramel slices that really stand out.

14. There are more kangaroos than people in Australia, "making life more adorable". But they are becoming a pest of plague proportions, particularly in areas of southwest Queensland. "It's put most of southwest Queensland into a drought much sooner than what would normally be the case," mayor of the Paroo Shire Lindsay Godfrey recently said of the kangaroo plague.

So, we've implemented culling, fertility control, sterilisation and "environmental modifications" to control it. Oh, and there's the kangaroo burger, of course. Not to mentioned the other inevitable - and dreaded - type of kangaroo encounter - dodging them in your car as they hop onto the highways in rural areas.

15. We dominate the world at rugby.

16. We take on conservation holidays, which can involve activities such as measuring plants in the rainforest.

17. We all have accents. Like, G'Day, mate ...

18. When life gets rough, Lake McKenzie is always waiting for us. Wait, where's that? It's tucked away on Fraser Island, Queensland.

19. Fairy penguins. So cute.

20. The stunning view along the Great Ocean Road.

21. We have the widest steel arch bridge in the world. Yep, the Harbour Bridge. If you haven't climbed it already, what are you waiting for?

22. Miley's ex Liam Hemsworth was born here.
